The former main church St. Nikolai, Hamburg is now a church ruins , a memorial and an important architectural landmark of the city. When in Hamburg of "St. Nicholas Church" is mentioned, it is usually described here meant building and not the new church of St. Nicholas, which is in Harvestehude district.
The current state of Nikolai Church is the result of air raids in World War II, the extensive demolition in 1951 and remediation work in the 1990s. Responsible for the restoration of the ruins as a memorial of the Sponsors Group, founded in 1987 Save the Nikolai Church Association, which is supported in its work by the City of Hamburg, the Church of St. Nicholas and various corporate sponsors and private donors. The organization arranges for the maintenance of buildings, the rubble and rescue found the organization of events and exhibitions in St. Nicholas Church and a documentation center that was established in the crypt.

Nevertheless, the decision was made for financial reasons, to tear down the nave, and are only allowing the tower, especially since this is now hardly more homes were.
