In ancient China, the hutongs were the epitome of an alley. I hope you like this map, the traditional not only from the long history of a particular kind of Chinese houses told, but of traditional urban living in general.
This picture was taken before a court in a hutong. Hutongs (Ch 胡同 / 胡同, hutongs) are narrow streets that were in Beijing to the 1990s, one of the prevailing traditional residential buildings.
Hutong is a Mongolian word (originally hottog), which meant as much as source, as the residents of these hutongs often lived near a well. In the Hutongs of Beijing
you can still see the traditional courtyards (siheyuan). In 2005 there were still about three thousand in Beijing hutongs, which are home to almost half of city dwellers. They are increasingly based on the transformation of the city center rare.
